Intention

As we step into the new year, many of us embrace the tradition of setting goals or making resolutions. A goal represents a desired result, while a resolution signifies a firm decision. Yet, life often unfolds in ways we cannot predict. The rigidity of these concepts can lead to self-criticism and frustration when our aspirations diverge from reality.
Yoga offers us a gentler approach: the concept of intention (Sankalpa in Sanskrit) — a heartfelt commitment to a course of action. Unlike rigid goals, intention invites us to align with a deeper sense of purpose while remaining open to the unfolding journey. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (1.12) remind us that progress comes through consistent practice (Abhyasa) and non-attachment (Vairagya). Embracing intention means cultivating a perspective that guides our actions without clinging to specific outcomes.
This year, I invite you to hold your intentions lightly, focusing not on results but on nurturing a mindset of curiosity and openness. Let your intentions serve as a compass, pointing the way while leaving space for the unexpected.
