Seguimos Aquí

Since the new administration has stepped in, each day seems to bring another piece of devastating news about the choices being made for our communities. It’s easy to feel disheartened and disconnected, as if the ground beneath us is slipping away. In moments like these, I remind myself of something important: marginalized identities have been through this time and time again, but we are still here.

There are so many identities that have never had the support of the government. Indigenous peoples, who the government has actively tried to erase, have always had to rely on their communities for survival. Black communities have carried the weight of systemic oppression for centuries, yet they have always created beauty, joy, and liberation in the face of it. Latinos, Immigrants, LGBTQI+, Disabled Communities, and so many others have been pigeonholed into stereotypes or treated as political pawns—if they were acknowledged at all.

Puerto Rico itself, though basically a colony, has shown the power of collective care. The image above is from Bad Bunny’s moving short film, which powerfully portrays the realities faced by Puerto Ricans today. This film and his new album remind us that the US government has consistently exploited the island and its people, disregarding their needs and futures. Hurricane Maria was a glaring example of this neglect: as thousands suffered and lives hung in the balance, the government failed to act. Yet, in the face of this abandonment, neighbors cared for neighbors, communities found ways to thrive, and the spirit of mutual aid continues to shine.

If the plants can adapt to survive global warming, we too can adapt to survive this. Just as the roots of a tree ground it through storms, we can root ourselves in the strength of our communities and the resilience we hold inside. Our humanity, our sacredness, is not defined by policies or politics. It is something no one can take from us.

As Bad Bunny’s art declares, "¡Seguimos aquí!"—We are still here! All of us.

This administration is loud and aggressive but it is not new. Those in power may move as they please but as long as we continue to take care of ourselves and each other, we will continue to be here long after they fall.
